  • Looking for a challenge and known for your attention to detail?
  • Utilise your experience in Telco Engineering and operations
  • Exciting opportunity to work on our NZ Network 'TransGO' upgrade project

Work in our 24/7 National Operations Centre (NOC) with a team committed to enabling a more sustainable energy future!

Transpower is the commercially focused and regulated State-Owned Enterprise that owns and operates the National Grid. At the very heart of the energy sector, we transport electricity from where it is generated to large electricity users and the distribution companies who deliver it to homes and businesses nationwide.

To play an active role in decarbonising the economy and reducing emissions though accelerated electrification, we continue to improve, accelerate, and scale as we look towards rapidly growing demand for clean energy, modern technology, more complex power flows, and changing customer and consumer expectations.

About the team

Within our ICT Division, our Telecommunications Network Operations Centre (NOC) team provides 24/7 monitoring, support and troubleshooting of Transpower's critical and business services across its national telco network, TransGO. This network covers a large number of substations across New Zealand and is there to support the Transpower Grid Division, supporting critical services such as SCADA and Tele-protection.

About the opportunity - based in Hamilton or Wellington

The TransGO network makeup requires you to be skilled in the management and operation of a Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy (PDH) architecture. There is also MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) between our larger critical sites.

Working across Transpower, you'll collaborate with our SCADA/RTU Team and Protection Engineers, Project Managers, and teams across our Information Services and Technology Division. Externally, you will coordinate with vendors, Transpower Service Providers, and third-party Telco Network Operating Centres (such as Spark, 2Degrees, Kordia, One New Zealand, etc).

You will be part of the National Operations Centre team providing 24/7 monitoring. Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. You'll be rostered 'on call' once every four weeks for a seven-day period to ensure that outside of core hours we maintain continuity of services, respond to any incident escalation, and communicate to business units the impact in a timely and concise way. Ultimately, your goal will be to restore normal service operations as quickly as possible and minimise the adverse impact on business operations and New Zealand.

Our network architecture is based on a fibre optic and radio geographically diverse network that extends the full length and breadth of New Zealand. You'll work with the full Telecommunications Services Team using a DesOps (Design/Operations) approach to managing and extending this network to meet Grid requirements.

You will also get to take part in the large and exciting challenge to upgrade the full TransGO network over the next 5 years.

What will you bring?

You'll have highly effective verbal and written communication skills and be comfortable working in the detail on the "system". You enjoy analysing problems, coming up with the solution, and being able to resolve at pace.

Your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:

  • Experience in operations and support of Telecommunications Systems and Platforms as described above.
  • You hold a Diploma in Telecommunications, or similar

Highly regarded but not essential will be one or more of the following:

  • ITIL Foundation Certificate
  • IP/Ethernet knowledge and skills
  • Radio experience
  • NMS platform knowledge and skills
